Now that we have seen the visual difference in the video quality between the two technologies, let's go over some pros and cons of each type of camera.
Analog cameras are obviously less expensive per unit. You may have to install more of them to cover large areas. However, in areas of lower light, it fares well to use analog, you just need to pay attention to a camera's Lux rating. In layman's terms, Lux is the measurement of a cameras ability to see in low light conditions. The lower the number the better the performance. Recorded video quality is much lower than IP cameras. Analog cameras use a DVR (digital video recorder) to store their images. DVRs are much more affordable than an NVR (network video recorder) that is used to store video for IP cameras.
The benefits of IP cameras begin with high resolution since they are digital. Light sensitivity is increasing with each new generation of IP technology, but still falls behind the ability of analog cameras. IP technology gives you the ability to cover a large area with a smaller amount of cameras, yet still delivering high resolution images throughout the entire field of view. However, mega pixel cameras (IP cameras) are more expensive than analog cameras. Also, with higher video quality requires much more memory to store the recorded images. Your typical IP camera setup will require a NVR with minimum of 8-10 TB of memory, some systems can go as high as 20-30TB of storage.
